Industrial Engineering is an interdisciplinary subject developed on the basis of engineering and management sciences, to deal with the development, improvement, and implementation of complex processes and systems by using the principles and methods of mathematical, physical, and social sciences. Industrial Engineering at Shanghai Jiao Tong University was initiated in the 1920s. It was in 1998 that the Department of Industrial Engineering and Management was established. 
      Our department current faculty consists of an outstanding group of about 20 members. The undergraduate enrollment is approximately 200, and the graduate student enrollment is nearly 100 including about 15 foreign students.
The research of the faculty covers major sub-specialties concerned in Industrial Engineering, such as Operations Research, Quality and Reliability Engineering, Logistics and Supply Chain Management, Service Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering and Engineering Management. The faculty have been regularly supported by grants from National Natural Science Foundation of China (NSFC), from Ministry of Science and Technology of China, and from projects funded by governments and enterprises.
      Now, there are many research centers and research labs in the department: healthcare and hospital management research center, data science research center, quality and reliability research center, operations research and simulation lab, intelligent logistics and scheduling lab, big data lab, etc. The departments also joins and supports many platforms at Shanghai Jiao Tong University, such as the Chinese Institute for Quality Research, and Sino-US Global Logistics Institute.
      The department has developed close relationships with foreign famous universities, covering a wide spectrum of activities, such as faculty exchange, dual degrees.
