Invited by Dong Wang, who is an associate professor in the Department of Industrial Engineering and Management, Prof. Andrew Kusiak, from the Department of Industrial and System Engineering at University of Iowa, who is also an international renowned expert in intelligent manufacturing, the IISE fellow, and the editor-in-chief of Journal of Intelligent Manufacturing, visited our department on June 13. Prof. Kusiak gave a lecture entitled “Intelligent Manufacturing: A Future Outlook”. The lecture was hosted by Prof. Ershun Pan, the dean of Department of Industrial Engineering and Management. More than 70 teachers and graduate students from our department attended this lecture.

Prof. Kusiak made a comprehensive elaboration about the research trends of intelligent manufacturing from several aspects, such as “Data-driven research”, “Impact of big data”, “Manufacturing as-a-service” and “Enterprise configuration”. The applications of data science and modeling algorithms in intelligent manufacturing were also detailedly introduced. The lecture systematically pointed out the direction of intelligent manufacturing with both depth and breadth.

After the lecture, Prof. Kusiak interpreted the current hot issues of intelligent manufacturing that the attendees cared about, and also carried out thorough and wide-ranging exchanges with relevant professors in the intelligent manufacturing research group from the Department of Industrial Engineering and Management.
