Release date:2019-05-23

A delegation consisting of 24 teachers and on-the-job graduate students of MEM/MBA from the School of Management at University of Texas at Dallas (UTD), U.S., came to the School of Mechanical Engineering at Shanghai Jiao Tong University for a two-week study-tour, on May 5, 2019. This was the second time that the delegation from the U.S. made a return visit officially since the part-time graduate students from our school visited the U.S. annually in 2013.

On May 6, the delegation from UTD came to the Minhang Campus of Shanghai Jiao Tong University. Wenguang Zhang, director of the Professional Degree Graduate Education Center, welcomed their arrival and introduced the development of our school and the cultivation process of the part-time graduate students to the delegation. Then the two sides conducted in-depth exchanges on issues of interest.

During the visiting, our school arranged a series of frontier lectures for those teachers and students from UTD. Prof. Xinguo Ming at the Department of Industrial Engineering and Management, gave a lecture entitled “Product Design and Innovation Management”. Prof. Shaopei Lin from the Engineering Management Research and Teaching Center made a lecture entitled “System Engineering and Its Applications”. Associate professor Wenguang Zhang gave a lecture on “Chinese Culture and Leadership”. Two associate professors, Wei Qin and Yanting Li, at the Department of Industrial Engineering and Management, gave lectures entitled “Big Data and Artificial Intelligence Frontiers” and “Made in China 2025 and Quality Management”, respectively. The above lectures received unanimous praise from the UTD delegation.

Moreover, the delegation visited Shanghai Jiao Tong University History Museum, State Key Laboratory of China of our school, Sinopec Shanghai Engineering Co., Ltd., Shanghai Construction Engineering Group and Shanghai Hongqiao High-speed Railway EMU Maintenance Site, etc., for in-depth study and understanding of the latest experience in the field of engineering management in China. In the meantime, they also visited Shanghai Urban Planning Exhibition Hall, Chenghuang Temple, the Bund, the Oriental Pearl and other attractions to understand and feel the culture and urban development of Shanghai.

The study tour not only provided students with the opportunity to exchange and learn in the classroom, but also provided them with a better understanding of the development and status quo of China’s engineering management through field trips, as well as a deep feeling of Chinese culture. They said they would introduce more students to the study tour about the engineering management (MEM) of China.

This kind of study tour began in 2013 and was facilitated by PMI-GAC. The School of Mechanical Engineering is one of the first project management and engineering management organizations with the PMI-GAC certification in China. With more than 20 years of experience and accumulation in on-the-job graduate student education, the school is one of the earliest organizations which develop program in the part-time Master of Engineering and MEM education. It also has professional qualification certifications in logistics, industrial engineering, project management and other professional fields. More than 7000 students are distributed in various industries. The SJTU-UT-Dallas two-way study tour program won the first PMI (China) “Excellence Education Award in Project Management” in 2018. It is the only education program in China that won this award.
